In this guide, we’re looking at felon friendly apartments in Minneapolis and a few other resources that will help you in your search for second-chance housing in the Twin Cities area.
6 Felon Friendly Apartments Minneapolis 2025
1. Great River Landing Apartments
If you’re a man transitioning out of incarceration or struggling with apartment background checks, Great River Landing in the North Loop is worth a look. This is one of the few places in Minneapolis offering affordable housing designed specifically for former offenders.
Residents receive on-site services like case management, employment placement, mental health support, and family reunification programs.
The property is run by Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative, with reentry services currently provided by 180 Degrees.
There are background checks, and certain convictions, including recent violent offenses, sex offenses, and drug distribution, may be disqualifying. Housing vouchers are accepted, and they consider “special cases” individually, so it’s worth applying even if you’re unsure.
Address: 813 N. 5th Street, Minneapolis

2. Amber Apartments
These no-background-check apartments don’t look at your credit or rental history. You will have to pass a criminal background check, but felonies are accepted here. Approval depends on the nature of the offense and how long it’s been since your conviction.
Located in the Longfellow neighborhood, these single occupancy studio apartments are $925 per month (market rate) or $650 for tenants with a qualifying low income.
Address: 4527 Hiawatha Avenue, Minneapolis, MN

3. Project For Pride In Living Apartments
With over 1,600 rental units in the Twin City area, Project for Pride in Living (PPL) is a key provider of felony friendly housing in Minnesota. They won’t approve all felonies, however, and you will need to pass a background check. Felonies are accepted on a case-by-case basis, and due to demand, apartment availability is limited.
You’ll need to earn 2x rent and show good rental history over the last 2 years. Poor credit isn’t a barrier, as long as you don’t owe debt to a previous landlord.

If you don’t meet all of PPL’s rental criteria, case-by-case exceptions may be made through an application for a Waiver of Rental Criteria.
PPL properties include the Bloom Lake Flats in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood, the Greenleaf Apartments in Lawry Hill East, the Camden Apartments in North Minneapolis, and many more.

4. The Elms Apartments
The rent you pay is based on your income at the Elms apartments in Elliot Park, where income limits apply. The apartments have on-site laundry and a bus line on the doorstep.
The Elms apartments are just one of the 60 affordable living communities in the Twin Cities area managed by the housing nonprofit, Aeon.
Felonies are accepted, but your background is subject to review. A criminal history that could impact the welfare of other residents is grounds for denial. Aeon will not approve serious crimes like arson, homicide, sexual offenses, or methamphetamine production.
Address: 1401 Portland Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN

5. Apartments From Alliance Housing
Alliance Housing believes in second chances for people that other landlords turn away. They accept felonies and will look beyond typical housing barriers like evictions and bad credit.
Their apartments are income restricted, meaning you’ll need to earn less than 50% of the area median income for your household size. You can call to ask if your income is within the limits.

6. HousingLink’s Affordable Housing Search
This is one of the most trusted housing search and guidance tools for renters in Minnesota. While HousingLink doesn’t filter by criminal history, many second-chance landlords post listings on the site. When you find a listing that might be a good fit for you, call and ask about the background check policy before submitting your application.
HousingLink also offers a rent assurance program called Beyond Backgrounds. The insurance policy, which is an alternative to traditional security deposits, costs $300 and covers your landlord for up to $2,000 of lost rent or damages.
